Mexico Opens 2026 World Cup with a Surprise Win

Confirmed by the Press Council, Administratively and Factually.

BOLASPORT - Amidst a torrent of three red cards, Mexico’s national team kickstarted the 2026 World Cup with a victory, courtesy of a crucial goal from a player outdoing Cristiano Ronaldo's sharpness.

The 2026 World Cup opener was held at the Estadio Banorte, also known as Azteca, in Mexico City, on Thursday (11/6/2026) local time.

As the host, Mexico faced off against South Africa following the grand opening ceremony led by Shakira and others.

This tournament has been intense since the first match, resulting in a total of three red cards!

Mexico has restored the home team's trend, which often leads to more victories in the opening match.

Following Brazil’s (vs Croatia 3-1, 2014) and Russia’s (vs Saudi Arabia 5-0, 2018) previous victories, the momentum briefly halted after Qatar’s (vs Ecuador 0-2, 2022) loss.

Now, with the presence of over 87,000 spectators, Mexico successfully reinstated their dominance as host nations in the opening match.

Coming off the field just five minutes in, the first shot, and simultaneously the first save of the 2026 World Cup, was registered by Raul Jimenez’s attempt, thwarted by Ronwen Williams.

The veteran Meksiko striker launched a volley that hit the ball low enough to be beautifully blocked by Afsel, South Africa’s goalkeeper.

However, Williams’ brilliance was short-lived, only four minutes later.

The first blunder of the 2026 World Cup occurred when Williams failed to fully control the ball that had been passed to him by Yaya Sithole.
