Miami's Win Over CF Montreal Highlights Struggles of a Short-Staffed Squad

MONTREAL — The struggles of CF Montreal's offense have become a major concern in recent weeks, and the club's 1-0 loss to Inter Miami on Saturday night highlighted the issues that have plagued them since the World Cup break.

Under the guidance of interim head coach Philippe Eullaffroy, CF Montreal had shown significant improvement, scoring in eight of their nine matches leading into the break. However, since then, the club has been unable to find the back of the net, dropping points in their last three MLS matches.

'(It can be frustrating) when you're not winning, and you're not scoring when you have the opportunity to score,' said Eullaffroy. 'I want them to know that we're proud of them the way they played the last two games, but they need to be conscious of why we're missing the chances we're missing.'

Montreal had plenty of scoring opportunities, but ultimately came up short against Miami's short-staffed team, which was missing several key players. Despite the lack of manpower, Miami has now won six consecutive road games, and their victory marked another game where a lack of finishing quality in the final third resulted in dropped points for Montreal.

CF Montreal's players struggled to find the back of the net, as they failed to capitalize on several clear-cut chances. Prince Owusu's perfect low cross to Daniel Rios in the 12th minute was spectacularly mishit, and Hennadii Synchuk's spectacular backheel in the 14th minute was spectacularly saved by Miami goalkeeper Rocco Rios Novo.

'The engagement, the willingness, and the respect of the game plan are all there,' said Eullaffroy. 'We're just missing that efficiency in the final third, and I think in the first 15 to 20 minutes we should have scored at least one.'

The game took a dramatic turn in the 70th minute when Germán Berterame and Efrain Morales' heads made contact, knocking Berterame unconscious and requiring him to be removed by ambulance. Although the contact was ruled a foul, Miami was awarded a penalty, which Luis Suárez dispatched down the middle of the goal, securing the win for Inter Miami.

'It's frustrating to play well and have interesting ideas, but we just have that finishing and that goal as what's missing,' said captain Samuel Piette. 'For me, it changes the narrative of the work and the performance. Right now, we're focused on 'we're not scoring, we're not creating many chances, we can't finish them,' but on the other hand the very solid defensive work gets forgotten.'

With the summer transfer window open, CF Montreal is now forced to turn their attention toward bringing in more attacking strength. Montreal is known for being effective in acquiring midfielders and defenders, but this year, they will need to focus on fortifying their attack.

Eullaffroy hinted that the club is actively searching for new players to fill the void, noting that 'I've provided the front office with certain demands for players. The grocery list is done, and I'm counting on crossing out some items very soon.'

The defeat marks another frustrating loss for CF Montreal, who are now winless in their last six MLS matches. However, they will have another chance to turn their season around when they host the New England Revolution on Saturday, August 1.

Inter Miami, on the other hand, will look to continue their momentum when they host the Columbus Crew on Saturday, August 1. With their six-match winning streak, they have proven themselves to be a formidable team this season.
