Microsoft has made the shocking decision to close down the renowned Ninja Theory studio, leaving fans in a state of uncertainty.
In a recent wave of studio shutdowns, Microsoft has decided to bring the curtain down on the award-winning Ninja Theory. According to a reliable source, the studio's staff was informed about the closure on a call on Monday, and there are hopes that it will find a buyer. This news follows a report by Bloomberg that several studios within Microsoft's XBOX gaming division were at risk of being shuttered as part of a broader reorganization.
Ninja Theory's closure comes as a surprise, especially after its prominent appearance at the XBOX Games Showcase, which showcased Senua's Saga: Hellblade II. Studio head Dom Matthews had confirmed in an interview that the team had canceled their previously announced Project Mara to focus entirely on Hellblade II.
The studio's closure follows a statement from XBOX CEO Asha Sharma and chief content officer Matt Booty, which referred to a 'reset' within the company. They stated, 'We expanded our studio system when we needed a pipeline of content to meet multiple strategies… In the process, we have found ourselves overextended as we executed on changing strategies in a landscape of more readily available content.'
Ninja Theory is not alone in facing possible closure, as XBOX considers shutting down Compulsion Games and Double Fine as well. Both studios are actively negotiating their futures, but it remains to be seen what the outcome will be.
Ninja Theory was best known for its innovative games, including the critically acclaimed Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and DmC: Devil May Cry.
