Elina Svitolina vs Tereza Valentova · Round 2 · Cincinnati Tennis.com - A nail-biting encounter...

Mirra Andreeva is officially the new Roland Garros champion after securing a convincing 6-3, 6-2 victory over young star Maja Chwalinska in the women's singles final. At 19 years old, the Russian player not only lived up to expectations as a tennis prodigy but also set a historic milestone that has never been achieved before by a new generation of WTA players.
With this title, Andreeva becomes the first Russian female tennis player to win Roland Garros since Maria Sharapova in 2014. The victory in Paris marks the return of Russian tennis to the top of the clay court after a decade-long wait. Interestingly, she is also the first player born since 2005 to win a Grand Slam title, surpassing her teenage counterparts like Coco Gauff.
Upon receiving the trophy, Andreeva shared emotional thoughts about her journey, overcoming pressure, and thanking the organizers and her support team. The 19-year-old surprisingly also thanked herself for always believing in her abilities, giving 100% even in the face of adversity, and fighting against her inner fears.
Although she did not lift the champion's trophy, Maja Chwalinska still made history at Roland Garros. Entering the tournament with a world ranking of 114, the Polish player became the lowest-ranked WTA player to reach the final since rankings were introduced in 1975.
This achievement propelled Chwalinska 93 ranks to a career-high 21st in the world, securing a seeded spot in the upcoming Wimbledon tournament. The $1,625 million runner-up prize money marks a significant financial turnaround for a player who faced financial difficulties before the tournament began.
After her win in Paris, Mirra Andreeva gained an additional 1,570 points, rising to sixth in the global WTA rankings. The outcome solidifies her position among the world's top tennis players.
