Major League Baseball has come down hard on San Francisco Giants players who wrote Bible verses on their Pride Night caps during a recent game.
The move, which sparked backlash from the LGBTQ+ community, was deemed a violation of league rules by MLB.
The Giants, who are based in a city with a large LGBTQ population, have made an extra effort to celebrate Pride Month throughout June.
However, the efforts of the team often clash with the league's players, many of whom come from conservative, religious backgrounds.
During a game against the Chicago Cubs, Giants pitchers Landen Roupp and JT Brubaker wrote Bible verses on their Pride caps, while another pitcher, Sam Hentges, chose not to wear the cap at all.
Roupp wrote 'Gen 9:12-16' on his cap, a verse that contains a reference to a rainbow, a symbol of Pride.
He denied that his decision to write on his cap was malicious, stating that he believes in God and stands firm in his faith.
Hentges expressed that he did not appreciate being told to wear the cap, feeling forced to support something he doesn't morally agree with.
The Giants have stated their commitment to Pride Night and the LGBTQ+ community, but apologized for any pain and anger caused by the players' actions.
MLB chief communications officer Pat Courtney warned the players about future violations, citing a violation of league rules.
The incident highlights the ongoing tension between the league and its players, many of whom come from conservative backgrounds.
The San Francisco Giants remain committed to Pride Night and the LGBTQ+ community, but the controversy has sparked a wider conversation about inclusion and respect in sports.
