Mo Salah's Emotional Farewell at Anfield

JAKARTA - Separation from a key player is rarely measured by statistics alone. On May 25, 2026, at Anfield, it was the tears that spoke louder. Mohamed Salah ended his nine-year journey with Liverpool with a poignant moment, one he confessed was difficult to control.

The Egyptian player was unable to hide his emotions during Liverpool's final match against Brentford, which ended in a 1-1 draw. As he was substituted out in the 74th minute, the entire stadium paid its respect with a standing ovation. Salah then kissed the Anfield pitch, as if bidding farewell to his second home.

After the match, the emotional mood became even more pronounced. Liverpool's players and staff formed a guard of honor to bid farewell to Salah. In that moment, tears welled up in the 33-year-old player's eyes.

“I cried a lot, maybe more than in my entire life. It's hard to leave a place like this,” Salah said.

He also admitted that his emotions had been building up even during the final training session.

“I'm not a very emotional person, probably not as much as you see in the media. You might see me as tough and aggressive. But inside, I'm like a baby,” he said.

Salah's departure marked the end of one of the most successful eras in Liverpool's modern history. Since joining from AS Roma in 2017, Salah transformed into an icon and the backbone of Liverpool's golden generation.

Over nine seasons, Salah played 442 games, scored 257 goals, and provided 120 assists. His assist to Curtis Jones against Brentford was a special moment, marking his 93rd assist in the Premier League, breaking Liverpool's record he shared with Steven Gerrard.

It's not just numbers; Salah has been the driving force behind two Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, and a total of eight trophies during his time with The Reds.

Dominating the all-time goal-scoring list for Liverpool, Salah is now in third place, below Ian Rush and Roger Hunt. He has won the Premier League Golden Boot a record four times.

In an interview after the match, Salah reminisced about the long journey he shared with his teammate Andy Robertson, who is also leaving the club. “We've spent our youth here, sharing everything from start to finish. We never thought we'd achieve all this, but we did it for this club,” he said.

Salah left a message for the players who will take on the challenge of carrying Liverpool forward.

“The club must keep fighting for everything. The fans won't accept anything less,” Salah said.

“They care less about the result, as long as you're pouring your heart and soul into the club. They will love you forever.”

Although confirmed to join the Egyptian national team for the upcoming World Cup, Salah has yet to announce his next club destination.
