New Authority Forms to Govern the Strait of Hormuz, 26 Tankers Transit the Waterway

TEHRAN - The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy has announced that 26 commercial vessels, including oil tankers and container ships, have passed through the Strait of Hormuz in the past 24 hours.

According to Marine Insight, Thursday (21/05), the movement of vessels through the strategic waterway has taken place after obtaining permission and is under the coordination of Iranian authorities, particularly the IRGC Navy.

The statement, also broadcast by Iranian government media and Tehran Times on Wednesday, emerged amid increasing global shipping market attention to turmoil in the Gulf region following the escalation of military conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel.

Since the war with the US and Israel began on February 28, Tehran has tightened monitoring of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has made it mandatory for all commercial vessels to obtain permission before entering the waterway.

To manage traffic and strengthen monitoring, Iran has also formed a new body called the Persian Gulf Strait Authority or Strait of Hormuz Authority.

Despite showing signs of gradual recovery, the number of 26 vessels per day is still far from normal conditions before the conflict. Before the war broke out, around 138 vessels crossed the Strait of Hormuz every day.

Several countries have begun to resume transit after obtaining approval from Iran. South Korea announced last Wednesday that one of its oil tankers successfully passed through the Strait of Hormuz, becoming the first transit by the country since the conflict began.

In the previous week, Iran mentioned over 30 vessels, including some affiliated with China, which had also been allowed to pass under the coordination and security of the IRGC Navy.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most critical oil distribution routes, connecting oil producers in the Gulf to global markets. Disruptions to this route pose a potential impact on global oil supply, ship tanker operations, and international trade.
