NHL Investigates Mike Babcock's Sudden Resignation from Blue Jackets

The NHL is set to officially begin its investigation into former Blue Jackets coach Mike Babcock's 2023 resignation from Columbus. According to Elliotte Friedman, sources indicated that there will be multiple parties interviewed as part of the process. At issue is whether there will be any further penalty or if the Oilers will be free to hire him, as he has met with the team's ownership and front office.

The investigation is focused on the circumstances surrounding Babcock's resignation, including reports of issues beyond looking at players' phones that got him into trouble in Columbus. The NHL and NHLPA dropped the matter when Babcock resigned, but sources indicated that there was at least one other conversation that caused concern.

The Oilers are considering hiring Babcock, and the investigation's outcome could impact their decision. If the NHL clears him to coach, he might turn out to be exactly what the structurally challenged Oilers need to win a Stanley Cup with Connor McDavid. However, some critics argue that Babcock's coaching style is focused on humiliating players and breaking them down, rather than teaching them to win.
