Nick Cave paid a heartfelt tribute to his late friend Shane MacGowan, performing the Pogues' iconic song "A Rainy Night in Soho" during a concert in Ireland, MacGowan's beloved island. The performance took place at Malahide Castle & Gardens, a fitting venue given its connection to MacGowan.
Cave, accompanied by The Bad Seeds, played piano and sang MacGowan's poignant lyrics with evident emotion. Violinist Warren Ellis contributed a soulful solo, adding to the touching elegy for MacGowan, who passed away in 2023.
"A Rainy Night in Soho" has resonated deeply following MacGowan's death, with other artists like U2 and Bruce Springsteen also performing or recording versions of the song in tribute.
The concert also featured other notable rarities from The Bad Seeds. "Train Long-Suffering" was played for the first time since 1989. Additionally, the band performed "Stranger Than Kindness," a song co-written by former members Blixa Bargeld and Anita Lane, for the first time since 2015. Cave had previously honored Lane, who died in 2021, with the song "O Wow O Wow (How Wonderful She Is)" on the latest Bad Seeds album, "Wild God."
The Bad Seeds also played some rarities at the concert, including the first performance of "Stranger Than Kindness" in more than a decade.
