Nicolás Otamendi Gives Guarantee Ahead of Argentina's World Cup Debut: 'This Will Be My Last World Cup'

Nicolás Otamendi, the former central defender and captain of Benfica, has given a statement during a press conference regarding Argentina's World Cup 2026 opener against Algeria.

On the status of being champions: 'We've come in ready, we give our all because we know we're champions, and everyone wants to beat us. That's why we need to give it our all.'

On the match against Algeria: 'We must play our game, they have good players. And I think that a well-organized defensive unit is essential.'

On his fourth World Cup appearance: 'I'm enjoying these moments because this will be my last World Cup. Daily life, my teammates, it's a beautiful competition... There's nothing more wonderful than being here to defend my country's colors. I'm very happy about this opportunity. I'm not one to boast, but I believe that every time I've worn the uniform of my national team, I've done it with enthusiasm and determination, even when the results weren't in our favor.'

On preparing for the competition: 'I'm someone who takes good care of himself to be able to continue playing. When the World Cup in Qatar ended, I didn't know if I'd be able to be here, but I prepared. I did my best and playing every three or four days helps you get to the national team. The most important thing is the mentality and ambition.'

On the renewal of Argentina's team: 'More and more young players are appearing with great quality and a desire to defend these colors. Those who arrive in the team do so through merit, and it depends on the player. For us, the older players, this pushes us to keep playing, and it's why Argentina has stayed at the top these last few years.'

On Lionel Messi: 'We love seeing the little guy every day. He's someone simple, he prepares, it's a beautiful competition. It keeps you from getting complacent. When the ball is rolling, that's when you have to give it your all. Messi makes us all happy. Who doesn't love Leo? We must support and help him.'

The 2026 World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The tournament will bring together 48 teams and will be played in 16 modern stadiums.
