Pioneering Dominican, Puerto Rican NBA Stars Ignite Pride in Long Island Communities

Karl-Anthony Towns, the Knicks center, and Jose Alvarado, the Puerto Rican star, celebrated the team's championship win in San Antonio.

Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic are not known for producing basketball stars, but these two key players are changing that narrative.

Towns, whose mother was a Dominican immigrant, and Alvarado, a 'Nuyorican' born in Brooklyn, are fueling a burst of pride in their communities on Long Island as they celebrate the Knicks' historic win.

Marc Soto, a co-director of the annual Puerto Rican Hispanic Parade, said, 'It's just a tremendous sense of pride in the Hispanic community in general.'

Joe Saenz, a bilingual social studies teacher, is using Alvarado as a role model for his students, praising his hard work and grit on the court.

Alvarado, a 28-year-old 'Nuyorican,' has played for Puerto Rico's national team, including at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He brought back to his hometown on February 5 when he was traded by the New Orleans Pelicans.

'He just brings that whole Puerto Rican energy' to the game, said Marcos Maldonado, a Puerto Rican fan.

The emergence of Towns and Alvarado on the Knicks is a testament to the growing popularity of basketball in Latin America and the increasing representation of Latino players in the NBA.

Ringkasan

The historic NBA championship win by the Knicks brings a wave of pride in Long Island's Dominican and Puerto Rican communities as star players Karl-Anthony Towns and Jose Alvarado shine.
