Police Bodycam Footage Shows Student Arrested While Dying

Police bodycam footage has been released, showing the arrest of 18-year-old student Henry Nowak, who was stabbed to death in Southampton.

The footage from December shows the suspect, Vickrum Digwa, claiming he was racially intimidated by Nowak and acted in self-defense, despite this being a false claim. Digwa told police that his scarf had been removed and he had suffered injuries during the attack.

The police stated that they had coordinated with Henry Nowak's family before releasing the footage, which was also played in court. Digwa, 23, was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 21 years on Monday. He used a 21cm knife, which he claimed was part of his Sikh faith, to kill Nowak, who was walking home alone after a night out with friends in Southampton on December 3. A judge rejected Digwa's racism claims.

Speaking outside court, Henry's father, Mark Nowak, stated that the difference in treatment between his son and Digwa was 'intolerable'. 'Henry should not have died on the streets of Southampton in police custody,' he said, calling the incident 'inhumane and degrading'. He added that Digwa was 'treated with kindness' and 'to our knowledge, he was never handcuffed at all'.

'Henry did not die with dignity. He did not die with the care he deserved. He lost consciousness before anyone believed him,' he added.
