Portugal's preparations for the World Cup took a blow on Saturday night with a disappointing loss in a friendly match against Chile. The incident began with a reckless tackle by Rafael Leão, who was issued a red card late in the first half for his involvement in a chaotic confrontation with Chile's Iván Romero.
Courtesy of their red cards, both Leão and Romero will be suspended for their team's next match. However, if the FIFA disciplinary panel decides that their actions warranted more severe punishment, they could potentially miss Portugal's opening match against the Republic of the Congo on June 17.
The altercation started over a disputed header between João Cancelo and Felipe Faundez in front of the goal. Iván Romero jumped into the fray and head-butted Cancelo, leading to a heated exchange between the two players.
Leão, who had initially tried to intervene, soon lost control and grabbed Romero by the neck with both hands. He then shoved the Chilean player to the ground, escalating the situation. The match descended into chaos as several players became involved in the altercation.
Referee intervened and showed both Leão and Romero a red card. Cancelo, who had also been involved in the fray, escaped with a yellow card.
This incident serves as a reminder of the gravity of such incidents during matches. Jurgen Locadia of Curaçao was also given a red card in a friendly match last week for a similar transgression. Although he was expected to miss his team's final warm-up match, he was ultimately allowed to participate in the first match of the World Cup against Germany.
