GILLETTE, Wyoming – A red flag warning has been issued for the Campbell County area, effective from noon to 8 p.m. today. Critical fire weather conditions are expected due to dry air and gusty winds across northeast Wyoming.
The National Weather Service in Rapid City, South Dakota, has issued the warning, citing relative humidity levels below 20% and northwest winds that could gust up to 32 mph. The combination of dry and breezy conditions will result in elevated fire weather concerns across northeast Wyoming and southwest South Dakota throughout the afternoon.
The region can expect warm and dry weather, with temperatures rising to a high of 84°F on Tuesday. Winds will shift from the southwest to the northwest this morning, maintaining speeds between 16 and 21 mph.
Skies will turn mostly cloudy tonight, with the low temperature dropping to around 47°F and light and variable winds.
Another weather system is expected to move through the region on Wednesday, bringing afternoon temperatures back down to a high near 70°F. While the day will be sunny, northwest winds will pick up to speeds between 18 and 25 mph, resulting in gusts of up to 38 mph.
Northeast Wyoming will remain dry until the end of the week, with temperatures hovering around 71°F on Thursday and rising to 82°F on Friday for the Juneteenth holiday.
The National Weather Service in Rapid City predicts that the prolonged dry spell will break next weekend, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms returning on Saturday and Sunday.
