Remembering Sir Frank Williams, Who Never Spoke Out About Ayrton Senna's Tragic Death at F1 San Marino

GridOto.com - Sir Frank Williams, the iconic team principal of Williams F1, had a remarkable journey in the world of motorsport. He experienced both successes and setbacks, but one moment that left a profound impact on him was the tragic death of Ayrton Senna at the 1994 San Marino GP.

After losing two world champion drivers, Nigel Mansell (1992) and Alain Prost (1993), Williams welcomed Ayrton Senna, a three-time F1 world champion, to their team in 1994.

It was expected that with Senna on board, Williams would regain their competitive edge in the world of F1.

Naturally, Senna delivered a pole position in the inaugural season-opening race at his home Grand Prix in Brazil, but unfortunately, he failed to finish due to a spin.

The next two races at Aida, Japan, saw Senna secure pole position once again but couldn't complete the race after colliding with another driver in the first lap.

However, at the third race in San Marino, Senna, who started from pole position, was involved in a devastating crash at Imola.

As he was racing his Williams FW16 Renault at the front of the pack, he lost control, spinning through the Tamburello turn and crashing into the concrete barrier at a speed of 310 km/h.

The telemetry showed that Senna managed to slow down from 310 km/h to 218 km/h in under two seconds before hitting the wall.

The impact damaged the car's suspension and caused the rear tire to fly off.

Unfortunately, Senna was unable to move, and the medical team was quickly summoned to the scene, but nothing could be done to save him.

Ayrton Senna was pronounced dead on Sunday, May 1, 1994, at just 34 years old.

Since the tragic incident, Williams have honored Senna's memory each season by displaying the Senna logo underneath the wing of their car.
