The Colorado Rockies were looking to bounce back from a tough loss on the road, but their comeback efforts were ultimately thwarted in a thrilling 6-5 loss to the Minnesota Twins at Target Field on June 26, 2026.
The Twins got off to a hot start, with their star slugger, Byron Buxton, belting his 25th home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning. But the Rockies weren't far behind, with their own power-hitting prospect, Vladimir Sutil, crushing a two-run homer in the top of the second to tie the game at 2-2.
The game was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams trading runs and neither able to take control. In the top of the fifth, Rockies' second baseman, Jose Gomez, singled home a run to give his team a 4-3 lead, but the Twins responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead at 5-4. The Rockies fought back once more, tying the game at 5-5 in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Rockies' shortstop, Carlos Rivera.
However, the Twins weren't about to let the Rockies' comeback efforts go to waste, as their bullpen shut the door in the top of the eighth, handing the ball off to their closer, Camilo Doval, who retired the side in order to seal the victory.
For the Rockies, it was a tough pill to swallow, but their manager, Bud Black, remained optimistic about his team's chances moving forward. 'We battled hard out there tonight,' Black said. 'We just came up a little short. We need to keep fighting and stay focused on our goals.' Sutil and Gomez each had two hits and an RBI for the Rockies in the loss, while Rockies' starter, Kyle Freeland, tossed 6 2/3 innings of four-run ball, striking out six.
The loss dropped the Rockies' record to 36-38, while the Twins improved to 42-30. The two teams will meet again tomorrow in the final game of their three-game series, with first pitch slated for 1:10 PM MDT. The Rockies will be looking to bounce back and even the series, but they'll face a stiff challenge against Twins' ace, Jose Berrios.
The game marked the 15th matchup between the Rockies and Twins this season, with the Twins holding a 9-5 advantage in the series. The two teams have combined to score 155 runs in the 20 meetings, with the Twins' offense posting a .283 average and 14 home runs.
Despite the loss, the Rockies remain in a heated battle for a Wild Card spot in the National League, just 6 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. With the trade deadline looming, the Rockies will be looking to make some key moves to bolster their roster and make a push for the postseason.
