The new Roland Garros champion has replaced Sharapova, a new young superstar in the world of tennis.
Mirra Andreeva becomes the new Roland Garros singles champion after defeating Polish sensation, Maja Chwalinska, in the final with a score of 6-3, 6-2. Andreeva won the title at the age of 19 after years of being touted as a talented WTA young player, even compared to her predecessor, Maria Sharapova.
The Russian tennis player said in the award ceremony: "I've watched Roland Garros on TV since I was very young. Winning the tournament is something very big. I don't believe I'm holding the trophy in my hands, so thank you very much to the organizers for creating an amazing event."
"Thank you to all the ball collectors, line judges, and umpires. I know it's not easy to play on the field with unpredictable weather throughout the first week, so thank you all for your hard work and making us feel more comfortable on the field,"
Andreeva thanked her parents, coach, and assistant, but most importantly, she thanked herself: "I also want to thank myself because I believed in myself, gave 100% even when the situation was difficult, tried every day to become better, held tight to my belief that I could do it, and fought against all my inner fears. Only I know how hard and stressful the last two weeks have been, so thank you to myself for giving my best and giving everything,"
With this title, Andreeva becomes the first Russian women's tennis player to win Roland Garros since Sharapova in 2014. She is also the first player born in 2005 or later to win a Grand Slam title, regardless of gender. Before Andreeva, Coco Gauff was the first teenager to win a Grand Slam when she won the US Open in 2023.
After her win in Paris, Andreeva will receive an additional 1,570 points in the ranking, which will move her to the sixth position. This position is actually still one ranking below her highest ranking ever.
Although she could not end her fairy tale journey with a prestigious trophy, Maja Chwalinska rises 93 rankings in the WTA ranking, collecting 1,300 points. Starting Roland Garros at number 114, Chwalinska becomes the final with the lowest ranking in the tournament history since it was first held in 1975. She is now ranked 21 in the world, her highest position in her career, and is guaranteed to be seeded at Wimbledon.
Furthermore, Maja Chwalinska has just received the largest prize money in her career within the last three weeks. From previously having insufficient money for hotel accommodation and relying on sponsors for assistance, this Polish tennis player has been presented $1,625 million for finishing as runner-up.
