Saudi Aramco Reigns Supreme in the Oil Industry, Valuation Surpasses $1.8 Trillion

In a world shifting towards renewable energy, the dominance of oil companies remains unchallenged. The valuation of global oil giants continues to grow, driven by soaring energy demand, geopolitical tensions, and the increased need for electricity from artificial intelligence data centers.

According to the latest report from Visual Capitalist, Saudi Aramco is the world's most valuable oil and gas company, with a market capitalization of over $1.8 trillion. This figure surpasses the combined value of the next five largest oil companies, including Exxon Mobil, Chevron, PetroChina, Shell, and TotalEnergies.

Together, the 20 largest oil and gas companies have a combined market capitalization of $5.1 trillion, nearing the size of the German economy and highlighting the significance of the fossil fuel industry in corporate wealth.

The United States dominates the list, with eight American companies making the top 20. Exxon Mobil leads the pack with a market capitalization of $637 billion, followed by Chevron at $380 billion. ConocoPhillips rounds out the top 10 with a valuation of $152 billion.

Outside the US, China is represented by three state-owned oil companies: PetroChina, CNOOC, and Sinopec, with a combined valuation of $541.6 billion. Europe is also well-represented, with Shell, TotalEnergies, BP, Equinor, and ENI, although their combined value still lags behind Saudi Aramco.

The report attributes the current valuation of global oil companies to two primary factors: the risk of energy supply disruptions and the growing demand for electricity worldwide.

Much of the attention in the market is focused on the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil trade route responsible for around 20 million barrels of crude per day. Any threats to this vital route are expected to drive up oil prices, boosting the prospects of energy companies globally.

In addition to the Strait of Hormuz, the rapid growth of AI data centers, industrial electrification, and rising global electricity demand are all contributing to the strategic importance of energy companies. As energy demand continues to climb, oil and gas companies remain crucial to maintaining global energy stability.

The list also includes Petrobras, the sole representative from Brazil, with a market capitalization of $142 billion. Canada is represented by Enbridge and Canadian Natural Resources.

While the trend towards renewable energy continues to gain momentum, this data suggests that the global oil and gas industry remains a major draw for investors. Oil and gas companies continue to be the backbone of the global economy, especially as global energy demand outpaces the ability of renewable energy to replace it entirely.
