Shrek 5 Trailer: The Franchise Returns After 17-Year Hiatus, But Will Fans Accept Change?

After 17 long years, the Shrek franchise is back with Shrek 5, and the latest trailer has finally dropped. The new installment promises to take us on an exciting new adventure with the beloved ogre family - Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona - on a thrilling new journey with their teenage triplets. The franchise returns to theaters this summer, but is the trailer's attempt to modernize the beloved characters enough to keep fans on board?

The new trailer shows the lovable ogre family setting off on a journey to 'the magical city of Further Further Away' with an unmistakable dash of pop culture subversion. The trailer's humor is sure to delight fans of the original film, with moments like the hilarious scene where Shrek and company pass by a haggard snowman who eerily resembles Olaf from the Frozen movies.

While the first teaser for Shrek 5 ignited a firestorm earlier in 2025 when many people expressed discontent about the revised animation style that looked different from the original films, this new trailer is a bit more subdued in its presentation. Donkey has certainly aged a bit since the last film, but the characters still retain their lovable charm.

There's a valid point to be made that the characters should have naturally evolved with time to reflect the passage of years in the fantastical world of Shrek, and that the updated designs aren't entirely unwelcome. However, the lack of comments on the original teaser seems to suggest that many fans are divided and unsure about the direction the new film is taking.

Despite the uncertainty, it's undeniable that Shrek 5 seems determined to forge its own path. The new film is co-directed by Walt Dohrn, who also worked as a writer and voice actor on the previous three films, and Shrek 2 director Conrad Vernon. Shrek 5's release is highly anticipated, especially with plans already underway for not only a sixth Shrek movie but also a spin-off dedicated to Donkey.
