Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner has successfully reclaimed the world number one spot after defeating his rival, Carlos Alcaraz, in the final of the Monte-Carlo Masters 2026.
Competing at Court Rainier III in Monaco, Sinner won in two sets with scores of 7-6 (5) and 6-3 in a thrilling match that lasted over two hours.
This victory marks Sinner's first ATP Masters 1000 clay court title.
The outcome has earned Sinner 13,350 points, surpassing Alcaraz (13,240 points) in the ATP Rankings.
'Returning to the world number one spot means a lot to me,' said Sinner.
The final was intense, with Sinner bouncing back at a critical moment.
The match took place in windy conditions that disrupted the players' rhythm. Alcaraz initially took the lead, including breaking Sinner's serve in the first set.
However, Sinner showed remarkable consistency from the baseline. The first set was decided by a tie-break, which Sinner won after Alcaraz made a crucial double fault.
In the second set, Alcaraz led 3-1 but his momentum collapsed due to pressure and numerous unforced errors, totaling 45.
Sinner capitalized on the opportunity, leveling the score at 3-3 and then winning five consecutive games to secure the victory.
This historic win extends Sinner's dominance, with 22 consecutive victories in Masters 1000 tournaments.
Sinner has also made history by matching the achievements of legends like Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal as players who have won four consecutive Masters 1000 titles.
Additionally, Sinner is one of the few tennis players to have swept the 'Sunshine Double' (Indian Wells and Miami) and won the Monte-Carlo title in the same season.
Despite losing, Alcaraz showed sportsmanship, praising Sinner's outstanding performance.
'What you've achieved is very impressive,' Alcaraz said during the trophy presentation ceremony.
