S&P 500 Sees a 1.7% Surge: $1.2 Trillion Added to Market Cap Following US-Iran Deal

The agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil chokepoint, triggered a relief rally across equities, crypto, and commodities.

This single diplomatic announcement had a profound impact on the S&P 500, increasing its value by 1.7% on June 15. The index's gain translates to approximately $1.2 trillion in added market capitalization.

The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which accounts for roughly 20% of global oil and liquids transport, has significantly impacted oil prices. They dropped by more than 4% to around $83 per barrel, with virtually every risk asset experiencing a bid.

President Donald Trump promoted the agreement, framing it as a reduction in geopolitical risk, which markets seized upon. Cheaper energy means lower input costs for corporations, reduced pressure on consumer prices, and a friendlier backdrop for the Federal Reserve to hold rates steady or even consider cuts.

Crypto markets also joined the rally. Bitcoin climbed to between $65,500 and $67,000, its highest level in nearly two weeks, representing a 2-3% gain following the announcement.

The agreement potentially changes the calculus on some of the financial pressures. While the sanctions on crypto wallets were a distinct enforcement action, a broader diplomatic thaw between the US and Iran could influence future policy decisions around asset freezes and financial restrictions in the region.

For crypto investors, Bitcoin's move into the $65,500-$67,000 range still sits below the levels many bulls were targeting earlier this year. Institutional demand remains the variable that will determine whether Bitcoin can sustain higher prices.
