An EF-1 tornado touched down in Springfield on June 10, causing damage in parts of the city.

A post-storm assessment by the National Weather Service confirmed the tornado damage, with initial reports suggesting it may have been caused by straight-line winds.

Springfield Fire Chief Nick Zummo stated that emergency personnel closely monitored National Weather Service alerts and remained in contact with regional emergency management partners throughout the evening.

"Based on the information available to emergency management personnel at the time, there were no radar-indicated tornadoes, trained weather spotter reports, or other indicators within Springfield that met activation criteria for the city's siren system," Zummo said.

Tornado warnings were issued for areas near Athens at 10:58 p.m. and Elkhart at 11:12 p.m., but those warnings did not include Springfield.

The Springfield Fire Department oversees the city's outdoor warning sirens, which are activated under certain conditions including sustained winds of 70 mph or greater, golf ball-sized hail or larger, radar-indicated tornadoes affecting Springfield, and confirmation of a tornado by a trained weather spotter.

Following the storm, Mayor Misty Buscher emphasized the need to review emergency response procedures and identify potential improvements.

"As Mayor, and as a resident of Springfield's north end, this storm unfolded in my own backyard," Buscher said. "As I watched the lightning and changing conditions, I wondered, like many residents, what exactly was developing. The weather escalated quickly and unexpectedly, catching many of us off guard."

Buscher expressed the city's commitment to working with public safety partners to strengthen preparedness and communication efforts.
