The Strait of Hormuz is expected to reopen. The United States and Iran are reportedly on the brink of a preliminary agreement to reopen the strait.
According to detikNews, citing Anadolu Agency, Monday (25/5/2026), this is seen as a concession from Tehran in exchange for its commitment to destroy high-enriched uranium.
A senior US official told The New York Times that the deal has not yet been signed and is still awaiting final approval from US President Donald Trump and Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei - a process that could take several days.
The official stressed that the method for destroying Iran's high-enriched uranium is still under negotiation.
The proposed deal, according to the US official, does not cover Iran's missile supply or enrichment moratorium. He added that these issues are expected to be addressed in the next round of talks.
A US official told Fox News that Washington could consider making "significant concessions" regarding trade sanctions if Iran agrees to make similar concessions regarding its nuclear supply.
“Our plan is to deal with all their enriched material,” the official said.
He added that the US sees Iran making "serious concessions" that have not been seen in previous negotiations.
A senior US official told The New York Times that the idea of a "toll tariff" for the Strait of Hormuz is rejected, calling the arrangement unacceptable and not proposed by both parties.
Separately, CBS News reported that the government sees this emerging deal stronger than the 2015 nuclear deal achieved during the era of former US President Barack Obama.
As part of the new deal, the US will lift the blockade on ships entering and leaving Iranian ports. A US official also stated that CENTCOM and its allies in the Gulf will coordinate to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
The US official said that US Vice-President JD Vance, US Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, and former US President Donald Trump's advisors and son-in-law Jared Kushner have all been involved in the talks. He stated that Washington is trying to engage all regional allies in the process.
So far, there has been no official statement from the White House on the emerging agreement. Iranian authorities have also not yet responded.
