The North Carolina baseball team pulled off an impressive 6-2 victory over Ole Miss in the opening round of the Men's College World Series on Friday night at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska.
Colin Hynek stole the show with a 3-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, giving the Tar Heels a comfortable lead and plenty of cushion for pitcher Caden Glauber. Hynek had a memorable outing, scoring two runs and walking once.
In the bottom of the seventh, UNC leadoff hitter Jake Schaffner hit a sacrifice fly to right field, tying the game at 2. Gavin Gallaher followed up with a single through the middle, scoring Hynek and giving UNC its first lead at 3-2.
Glauber delivered a solid performance, working around a 2-out single in the eighth to pitch a scoreless frame. He also got a double play to nullify a leadoff single in the ninth, securing the win for the Tar Heels.
Notably, UNC remains undefeated when Glauber pitches, boasting a 26-0 record this season.
Ole Miss took a brief 2-1 lead in the seventh inning, courtesy of Judd Utermark's hit. However, Glauber was on the mound for UNC in relief of Jason DeCaro, and he helped turn the tide in favor of the Tar Heels.
Earlier in the game, UNC slugger Owen Hull's solo home run in the bottom of the sixth tied the game at 1. This came after UNC starting pitcher DeCaro escaped a jam in the top half of the inning, striking out Austin Fawley with two runners on.
Ole Miss leadoff hitter Dom Decker's double in the top of the third inning plated the Rebels' first run. Ole Miss pitcher Taylor Rabe had kept UNC scoreless until Hull's eighth home run of the season.
The Tar Heels, who entered the CWS with a 50-12-1 record and a No. 5 national ranking, will move on to play West Virginia on Sunday at 7 p.m.
