German tennis player Alexander Zverev has been kicked out of the ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco, Mexico, for 'unsportsmanlike behavior' after a heated exchange with a referee during his doubles match.

Zverev, ranked third in singles, was playing alongside Brazilian partner Marcelo Melo when they lost 6-2, 4-6, (10-6) to British duo Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara.

After shaking hands with his opponents, Zverev approached the referee's chair and hit it repeatedly with his racket, before heading to the courtside seat, visibly angry about a phone call during the previous game.

This is not the first time Zverev has been involved in controversy. In 2019, he was fined $113,000 and given a 16-week ban for 'severe behavior' after an internal investigation.

In 2022, Zverev was also subject to an internal investigation by the ATP after allegations of domestic violence surfaced against him, made by his ex-girlfriend Olga Sharypova.

Zverev's outburst in Acapulco has sparked concerns about his behavior and potential sanctions from the men's professional tennis organization.

The tournament's organizers will now have to find a new player to replace Zverev, with fellow German Peter Gojowczyk set to receive a walkover to the quarter-finals.

Zverev's future in the tournament was left hanging in the balance, but the ATP has yet to confirm any further action.
