This weekend is shaping up to be an exciting and lively one in the city, as The Banks prepares to welcome tens of thousands of visitors from across the region.
The main event of the weekend is undoubtedly the Savannah Bananas' home series against the Indianapolis Clowns, a newly formed team in the Banana League that pays tribute to the original Indianapolis Clowns, a former Negro League team. The Bananas, known for their entertaining style of play, will take to the field at Great American Ball Park on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, offering fans a unique baseball experience.
The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center will also be hosting its annual Juneteenth Jubilee, a free event that kicks off on Friday morning and runs until 5 p.m. This event will not only celebrate the significance of Juneteenth but also provide an opportunity for attendees to learn about the rich history of the Underground Railroad and its impact on American society.
In addition to these events, The Banks will also be showing several World Cup matches on a large screen outside Great American Ball Park throughout the weekend. The biggest crowd is expected to gather at the Soccer Viewing Village on Friday afternoon when Team USA takes on Australia at 3 p.m.
According to Tracy Schwegmann, a representative of The Banks Public Partnership, between 40,000 to 50,000 people are expected to visit The Banks each day during the weekend. Schwegmann advises attendees to plan ahead and arrive early to avoid any potential parking or navigation issues.
'Have a plan, don't wait to figure things out at the last minute,' Schwegmann says. 'Parking in the immediate Banks area can become challenging once the stadiums are full, but there are plenty of parking options available in close proximity.'
Due to the expected high volume of attendees, security checks will be in place on Friday and Saturday nights, with a checkpoint located at 10 p.m. All attendees will be required to show identification, and only those 21 or older will be allowed entry into the entertainment district, unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.
'We're excited to welcome so many people to The Banks this weekend,' says Schwegmann. 'We've worked hard to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience, so please come out and enjoy the events and activities on offer.'
Ahead of the weekend, it's expected that many businesses and establishments in the city will be busy preparing for the influx of visitors. Local restaurants, bars, and shops will be offering a range of services and products to cater to the tastes and needs of attendees. With such a diverse range of events and activities on offer, there's something for everyone at The Banks this weekend.
The success of this weekend's events will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the local economy, with many small businesses and entrepreneurs relying on the influx of visitors to generate revenue.
