The music world is mourning the loss of Tay Keith, the 29-year-old producer who left an indelible mark on the industry. Born Brytavious Chambers, Keith's journey began at 14, when he first started making beats. He soon developed a signature sound adapted from Southern hip-hop royalty like Three 6 Mafia and 8Ball & MJG.
Keith's big break came in 2018, when his work with Memphis native BlocBoy JB started gaining traction. Their collaboration, 'Look Alive,' featuring Drake, was a massive hit and marked Keith's first major success. This was just the beginning, as he went on to co-produce Travis Scott's 2018 hit 'Sicko Mode,' which topped the Billboard Hot 100 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Song.
With hits like 'Not Alike' for Eminem's Kamikaze and 'Before I Let Go' for Beyoncé's Homecoming: The Live Album, Keith solidified his position as a go-to producer in the industry. He also executive produced Sexyy Red's 2024 album, Sexyy We Trust, whose breakout hits 'Pound Town' and 'SkeeYee' he produced.
In a 2022 interview with Rolling Stone, Keith reflected on the influence of growing up in Memphis on his work. 'I was born into this shit and raised in this shit,' he said. 'Memphis music is all I listened to and all my family listened to. My stepfather who I am still close with really influenced my taste for music.'
When discussing his own hardships growing up and how he relates to the youth he's helping, Keith emphasized, 'I was raised in Section 8, I was raised with a single mom majority of my life. I have been put out. I've been in situations where we had to get government assistance. I had free lunch and food stamps my whole life. I had to overcome a lot of adversity growing up and I made it a mission to be able to show the youth that it's possible.'
In his later years, Keith became passionate about giving back to his community. He partnered with the National Museum of African-American Music to provide young people with gifts and food, while also offering a seminar and free admission to the museum. He motivated and advised aspiring producers who reached out to him, serving as a beacon of hope and inspiration.
As the music world continues to process the loss of Tay Keith, his profound impact on contemporary music and beyond will be remembered for years to come. His dedication to helping others and giving back to his community will not be forgotten.
