The Rivalry Renewed: Chicago Cubs Take on Pittsburgh Pirates in Thrilling Matchup

The Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates have enjoyed a longstanding rivalry in Major League Baseball, with the two teams having faced each other over 1,500 times throughout their respective histories

As they take to the field this weekend, the Cubs will be looking to continue their recent dominance over the Pirates, who have struggled in recent years despite showing glimpses of promise in their talented young roster

Jameson Taillon, the Cubs' ace pitcher, is no stranger to the Pirates having faced them numerous times in the past, but this time around, he will be looking to prove himself as one of the top pitchers in the league, something he was able to prove in the previous matchup, where he pitched for the Yankees

The Pirates, however, will be relying heavily on their rookie pitcher Braxton Ashcraft who has been impressive so far in his first season, but this will be his biggest test to date

The stakes are high for both teams, as a win for the Cubs would push them back to the top of the division, while a win for the Pirates would propel them into contention for a wild card spot

Looking at the current statistics, the Cubs are the clear favorites to win this matchup, having a significantly better record than the Pirates over the past season, however, it's worth noting that the Pirates have a history of shocking the Cubs in this rivalry and have been known to pull off the upset

The game is set to take place at Wrigley Field this Saturday, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM ET, the Cubs faithful will be looking to get behind their team as they attempt to secure the win and continue their winning streak

From a pitching standpoint, the Cubs have a decided advantage, with their deep rotation and top-notch starters looking to shut down the Pirates' offense, which has struggled to find consistency this season, while the Pirates will be relying on their young arms to keep the Cubs at bay

In terms of injuries, both teams have had their share of setbacks, with Taillon missing significant time last season, but it appears he has fully recovered and is ready to go for the Cubs, while the Pirates' ace Wilfredo Briasaco has been out for a few games due to a minor injury but should be back in time for the matchup

One interesting aspect of this matchup is how much the game is expected to be affected by the weather, with a chance of rain in the forecast for Saturday, it remains to be seen if the game will be postponed or played as scheduled, a decision that could significantly impact the trajectory of each team's season

In a recent interview, Cub Manager, David Ross spoke about how this matchup is more than just a baseball game, 'this is a rivalry game, it's a battle for pride, we want to get back to the top of the division, we're looking for a W, and we're going to give it our all to get it'

Looking ahead to the rest of the season, the Cubs are poised to make a deep run, with their top-notch roster and talented young players, they're in position to make a serious push for the playoffs, while the Pirates, despite their struggles this season, still have a chance to make a surprising run and secure a wild card spot

This matchup is one to watch, as two of the top teams in the division face off in a battle for dominance, as the season continues to heat up, we can expect more exciting matchups like this one, but for now, it's all eyes on this weekend's showdown at Wrigley Field
