For many a Formula 1 driver, competing in their home grand prix is a privilege as well as an additional motivational factor.
However, for Charles Leclerc, the Monaco Grand Prix for years has been synonymous with various disappointments, incidents, and bad luck that have hindered his performance to the extent of not meeting expectations in front of his home crowd.
As a driver born and raised in Monaco, Leclerc consistently receives special attention whenever Formula 1 hosts a race in the narrow streets of Monte Carlo. Unfortunately, his career journey in Monaco has been repeatedly marred by a string of unfortunate events.
Charles Leclerc's run of bad luck in Monaco became apparent when he joined the Formula 1 circuit. In several instances, the Ferrari driver showcased extremely competitive speed during practice sessions and qualifying but failed to convert it into a maximum result during the actual race.
From less-than-advantageous strategies, technical issues, to track incidents, various factors seemingly have continuously obstructed Leclerc from shining in front of his home supporters.
In his debut F1 season in 2018 with Sauber, Leclerc was forced to withdraw from his home grand prix due to technical issues with his car's brakes. He even collided with Brendon Hartley (Scuderia Toro Rosso Honda) after being unable to stop his vehicle in a designated area.
A year later, Leclerc again had to face misfortune at Monaco. He failed to qualify in Q1 and had to start from 15th position. Initially, he was able to climb positions by overtaking drivers such as Romain Grosjean (Haas) but ultimately had to drop out due to a puncture in his car's rear wheel after a crash with a safety barrier. As a result, he finished DNF on lap 16.
One of the most heart-wrenching incidents occurred in 2021 when Leclerc secured pole position after an extremely impressive qualifying session. However, his joy was short-lived. Damage to his Ferrari caused by a qualifying incident prevented him from starting the race the following day.
Leclerc was left watching the Monaco Grand Prix from the sidelines despite having qualified first, a stark reality of how fate often does not favor him in Monaco.
In 2022, Leclerc managed to secure pole position and started the race without any issues, yet he could not avoid his nemesis in Monaco. This time around, his team's hasty decision to call him into the pit lane ultimately resulted in him losing the top position and even dropping out of the top three. Despite completing the race in fourth place, Leclerc was still unhappy with the outcome.
