The Wrong Girls is a stoner comedy that has been in development for over 14 years, with a unique concept that explores the world of weed culture in Los Angeles. Writer-director Dylan Meyer, along with stars Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat, share their passion for bringing the 'LA accent' to life in this film. By qualifying for the California Film & TV Tax Credit, the team was able to make this vision a reality.
Ahead of its release, Meyer shared that the movie has had a 'lot of different lives,' with initial plans to film in Vancouver, New Orleans, and even New Jersey, where they found a single house that could pass as Los Angeles. Stewart expressed her excitement about filming in her hometown, where she sees firsthand the struggle of working-class individuals trying to make ends meet. 'My brother's a grip, he's working construction. He should be making movies. That's fucking crazy,' she said.
The film's LA accent is a crucial element, with Stewart explaining that a Southern accent would not be fitting for the characters. 'It needs to sound like it's from L.A. It can't have a fucking southern accent. We came up with the word 'dude.' It has to stay home,' Meyer agreed. Shawkat added that Los Angeles has a unique way of 'holding people,' and that the characters in the film would not survive in New York City.
In The Wrong Girls, Frankie (Stewart) and Molly (Shawkat) are codependent stoner best friends who face a 24-hour challenge to pay their rent. Along the way, they discover a mysterious drug that allows them to read minds and communicate telepathically. Meyer drew inspiration from her own experiences smoking weed with friends, realizing that female friendship was an underserved theme in comedy.
Stewart, who has long expressed her desire to make a stoner comedy, praised the film's upbeat tone in these challenging times. 'Shit's rough right now, and it feels really nice to fall into something like a best friend movie, and also one that is like pretty fucking irreverent and also super earnest,' she said.
The ensemble cast, including LaKeith Stanfield, Kate McKinnon, Geena Davis, Tony Hale, Seth Rogen, and Kumail Nanjiani, made the experience 'really validating' for Stewart. Shawkat added that the positive response from the cast solidified their confidence in the project. Bringing a queer, femme strain of comedy to the stoner genre, Meyer noted the potential for a sequel, with the characters gaining superpowers at the end of the film.
Meyer admitted that there's 'so much left' to explore in the world of The Wrong Girls but also acknowledged the challenge of competing with the first film. The team's dedication to authentic storytelling and their connection to the LA culture shine through in this exclusive interview. As the stoner comedy prepares to hit theaters, fans are eagerly anticipating the unique blend of humor and heart brought to life by these talented individuals.
This film is a testament to the importance of supporting underrepresented voices in comedy. By embracing the 'LA accent' and the unique experiences of female friendship, The Wrong Girls brings a fresh perspective to the stoner genre.
