Toronto Maple Leafs Make First Trade Under New GM John Chayka, Part Ways with Goalie Joseph Woll and Defenceman Simon Benoit

In his first major move as the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, John Chayka has parted ways with goalie Joseph Woll and defenceman Simon Benoit. The two players have been traded to the Philadelphia Flyers, along with Toronto acquiring a third-round selection at next week's NHL draft.

This deal bears the fingerprints of Chayka and his senior executive assistant, Mats Sundin. It's clear that the team is looking to add more depth and bolster their goaltending for the upcoming season.

Woll, who had a respectable 63 wins in 117 games, was often out of action due to injuries and personal issues. Benoit, on the other hand, was not his best last season after fighting his way onto the Leafs roster a couple of years earlier.

In return, the Leafs will be getting defenceman Emil Andrae and goaltender Samuel Ersson, both of whom are restricted free agents. Andrae, 24, had 13 points in 61 games for Philadelphia last season, while Ersson, 26, appeared in 33 games with a 14-11-5 record.

The pick from the Flyers gives Toronto a total of eight selections in this year's draft, including first overall.
