Tropical Storm Lala: Kauaʻi, Niʻihau Under High Alert

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued a tropical storm watch for Kauaʻi County, encompassing the islands of Kauaʻi and Niʻihau, as of the 5 a.m. advisory on Friday. The watch is set to take effect for the next 36 hours, with the NHC closely monitoring Tropical Storm Lala's trajectory and potential impacts.

The primary concern for Kauaʻi residents and visitors is the heavy rainfall, with forecasters predicting an additional 3 to 6 inches of precipitation and possibly more in localized areas. This increased rainfall poses a substantial risk of moderate flooding, swollen streams, hazardous driving conditions, and potential road closures, evacuations, or rescues. Furthermore, rough surf, coastal erosion, and treacherous rip currents remain possible, emphasizing the need for residents and visitors to stay informed and prepared.

According to the Kauaʻi Emergency Management Agency, residents and visitors must closely monitor updated forecasts and be prepared to take action if flood watches or warnings are issued. This includes having a plan for emergency evacuations, maintaining a supply of essential items, and staying up-to-date with the latest weather conditions. Additionally, the Kauaʻi Department of Public Works has begun storm preparations, including clearing ditches, cleaning drains, and checking and fueling equipment to ensure a swift response in the event of flooding or other storm impacts.

Tropical Storm Lala's projected path has the storm core passing near the Big Island of Hawaiʻi on Saturday, followed by a southern trajectory south of the smaller islands on Sunday. As of 5 a.m. Friday, the center of Tropical Storm Lala was approximately 420 miles east-southeast of Hilo, moving at a pace of 12 mph while steadily strengthening. Maximum sustained winds currently stand at 60 mph, with higher gusts forecasted, potentially leading to an upgrade to a hurricane designation as the storm approaches the Big Island.

Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC) forecasters have issued a high surf warning for east-facing shores of the Big Island through Saturday night. Residents and others throughout the main islands and in Papahānaumokuʻā Marine National Monument should continue monitoring Lala's progress for potential hazards. On Kauaʻi, storm preparations are underway, with county crews pre-staging equipment in flood-prone areas to enable a swift response in the event of flooding or other storm impacts.

As the storm system approaches, the community must be vigilant and proactive. Stay informed with the latest weather updates and emergency alerts from trusted sources, such as the National Weather Service Honolulu forecast office website. Additionally, ensure you have an emergency kit, including essential supplies, and a plan for emergency evacuations in place.
