Trump Shifts Focus Back to Economic Sanctions Amid Stalled Talks with Iran

President Donald Trump has announced his administration's shift back to economic sanctions as a key strategy to end the ongoing conflict with Iran, a move that comes after months of stalled peace talks and a recent escalation of the war.

According to sources close to the administration, Trump believes that the Iranian economy has reached a breaking point, thanks in part to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports and ongoing sanctions that threaten third-party countries doing business with Iran.

The president's latest comments on the issue suggest that he is banking on the idea that the Iranian economy will buckle under the pressure of the sanctions, ultimately leading to a breakthrough in peace talks.

'Yeah, they can make trouble, but they're broke,' Trump said in a recent press conference, adding that 'Iran is broke, totally broke.' Iranian officials have disputed these claims, however, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei saying that 'the real risk is that American politicians, clinging to this bad habit, will instead strangle their own remaining chances of a less humiliating exit from a crisis of their own making.'

The Iranian economy has indeed suffered significantly since the start of the war, with estimates suggesting that the overall economy will shrink by 5.4% and inflation rates reaching as high as 88.6%.

Notably, the International Monetary Fund has estimated that the annual GDP growth rate in Iran has plummeted to -3.3% in 2026, down from 0.4% in the previous year.

However, Trump's decision to shift back to economic sanctions has faced criticism from some experts, who argue that this strategy has not yielded the desired results in the past.

'Economic pressure is a possible element in his strategy, but he's yet to explain the purpose,' said Richard Nephew, a senior research scholar at Columbia University who helped direct Iran sanctions strategy in the Obama administration.

Nephew added that 'Trump has systematically weakened his own hand through his inadequate use of force, inarticulate elucidation of an objective, and vacillation on negotiations.'

Others have argued that the current economic sanctions are unlikely to have an immediate impact on the Iranian economy, given the existing sanctions and trade embargoes that have been in place for decades.

'It's not just what the military can do — we've got the most powerful economy in the world as well,' said Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, adding that 'when you've got a motivated treasury secretary who can pull a lot of levers because he knows how to do it, you can put a lot of pressure on adversaries.'

Despite these challenges, the US Treasury Department has continued to impose new sanctions on Iranian individuals and entities, with an increased focus on disrupting the country's ability to sell oil on the global market.

The US has already restricted access to its financial markets, frozen assets, and imposed penalties on foreign companies doing business with Iran.

The administration's renewed reliance on economic sanctions highlights the difficulties the US has faced in achieving its goals through military action.

The war has led to a significant escalation of tensions between the US and Iran, with each side accusing the other of provoking the conflict.

The current stalemate in peace talks highlights the complexity of the issue and the deep-seated divisions within the region.

In light of this backdrop, it remains to be seen whether Trump's latest move will be enough to push the war in a new direction, or whether Iran will continue to resist the pressure until a more comprehensive and lasting solution can be found.

Ringkasan

President Trump's administration has pivoted back to economic sanctions as a strategy to end the ongoing conflict with Iran, a move that follows stalled peace talks and a recent escalation of the war.
