Unlock California's Rich History with the Special Edition Historian Passport

Sacramento, CA – To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the significance of Juneteenth, Governor Gavin Newsom has announced a special edition of the California State Parks Historian Passport. From now until July 6, 2026, residents can download this exclusive passport for free through ReserveCalifornia.com, granting them unlimited entry to over 30 historic state parks throughout the state.

This remarkable initiative, made possible through the efforts of California State Parks Foundation and the California State Railroad Museum Foundation, aims to bridge the gap between accessibility and historical exploration. By waiving the typical $50 fee, Californians from all walks of life can now explore the rich and diverse cultural, political, and social history of their state without breaking the bank.

“California state parks are the guardians of our collective memory, telling powerful stories that define the essence of our democracy,” said Rachel Norton, Executive Director of California State Parks Foundation. “We believe that everyone, regardless of their financial situation, deserves to learn from and reflect on our shared history. This special edition Historian Passport is an incredible opportunity to explore California’s past without financial barriers.”

The participating state parks showcase a stunning array of historical sites, including Gold Rush-era communities, military landmarks, missions, and museums that bring California's history to life. Some notable examples include that reflect the state's unique blend of cultures, architectural styles, and historical events.

This initiative marks the latest effort by California State Parks Foundation to ensure that all Californians have access to the state's natural and cultural treasures. Earlier this year, the organization funded a free-admission day at more than 200 state parks to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and has also championed the California State Library Parks Pass, providing free vehicle access to over 200 state parks for library cardholders across the state.

“Initiatives like the special edition Historian Passport, free entry on MLK Day, and the Library Parks Pass are vital to our mission of making California's state parks accessible to everyone,” emphasized Rachel Norton. “We're committed to supporting and advocating for initiatives that empower more Californians to experience these incredible places and foster a deeper appreciation for our shared heritage.”
