Unpacking the KATSEYE Drama: Sophia's Hiatus and Manon's Ongoing Absence

KATSEYE, a five-piece K-pop girl group, has been making waves with their energetic performances and catchy songs. Formed in 2023, the group consists of Daniela Avanzini, Lara Raj, Manon Bannerman, Megan Skiendiel, Sophia Laforteza, and Yoonchae Jeung. In recent months, however, the group has been embroiled in a dramatic controversy surrounding the health and well-being of its members.

Sophia Laforteza, a member of KATSEYE, has announced that she is taking a temporary hiatus from the group to prioritize her mental health and wellness. This decision follows the news that Manon Bannerman, another member of the group, is also taking a temporary hiatus due to health issues. The news has sent shockwaves throughout the K-pop fandom, with fans expressing concern and support for both Sophia and Manon.

The drama surrounding Sophia and Manon is far from new. In the summer of 2025, rumors began circulating that Manon was struggling with her health, leading some fans to speculate that she may be leaving the group. However, in an interview with Billboard at the time, Sophia reassured fans that the group would continue as six members, stating, 'It's forever going to be that way.'

But months later, Manon would announce on X (formerly Twitter) in February 2026 that she was taking a temporary hiatus due to her health and wellbeing. The news came as a shock to fans, who were quick to defend Manon and offer their support on social media. Despite her hiatus, Sophia has made it clear that the door is always open for Manon, saying in an interview with Allure, 'We love her and the fans love her.'

The situation took a turn for the worse when KATSEYE released the music video for their song 'Pinky Up' on April 9, without Manon featured alongside her fellow members. The decision sparked outrage among fans, who began organizing boycotts of the music video. Sophia later clarified that Manon had been involved in the teaser for the video before her hiatus, sparking further speculation about her departure from the group.

On April 14, KATSEYE released a new Gap x KATSEYE collection, which featured campaign photos of the band and hoodies designed through the lens of each member. Notably, Manon was missing from both the group photos and the individual photos of the singers showing off their hoodies. However, in one picture, six hoodies are featured, with Manon's design available for purchase on the website.

Sophia has reassured fans that Manon's well-being is the top priority, saying, 'We want to give her all the time that she needs, all the space that she needs, and so we don't want to make any assumptions, set anything in stone... She really deserves that, and the door is always open.'

Just days after missing the premiere of the KATSEYE: Wild Hearts documentary in Los Angeles, Sophia announced her own hiatus from the group. In a statement on social media, Sophia expressed her love for performing and sharing moments with fans, but prioritized her health, saying, 'I'm learning that health has to come first. I'm realizing that if I don't take care of my mind and body now, I won't be able to keep doing what I love the most for so long.'

KATSEYE's ongoing drama has left fans divided, with some expressing disappointment and frustration, while others are showing support for the group and their individual members. As the situation continues to unfold, one thing is clear: the health and well-being of KATSEYE's members will always be the top priority. Only time will tell what the future holds for this talented group of young women.

Manon has been spotted at Coachella, attending Sabrina Carpenter's set with Chappell Roan and Ice Spice by her side. However, she was noticeably absent from KATSEYE's performance at the event. The situation remains uncertain, with many fans eagerly awaiting an update on Manon's status within the group.

As KATSEYE looks to the future, it's clear that they will always prioritize the health and well-being of their members. Only time will tell what the future holds for this talented group of young women, but one thing is for certain: they have a dedicated fan base that stands by them through thick and thin.

The group's dedication to their music and fans is undeniable, with Sophia stating, 'We're only as strong as our weakest member. We need to make sure that we're all showing up for each other and all going at the same pace. We cannot leave anybody behind.'

As the situation continues to unfold, fans can stay up-to-date with the latest news and updates on KATSEYE's social media accounts. With the group's commitment to prioritizing their members' health and well-being, it's clear that they will always put their fans first.

KATSEYE's future may be uncertain, but one thing is clear: they have the love and support of their dedicated fan base. As Sophia so poignantly put it, 'We want to give her all the time that she needs, all the space that she needs... The door is always open.'
