Unraveling the Enigma: Where is Elize Matsunaga Now?

The streets of Sao Paulo still whisper about Elize Matsunaga's name, conjuring images of a cold-blooded murderer who brutally slaughtered her husband in 2012. However, a five-year gap since the release of the original mini-series 'Elize Matsunaga: Sinestra Festa de Fazes,' Netflix has revisited the infamous case with a 91-minute feature film titled 'Elize: Surgia de Ombra', reigniting curiosity about where Elize has been all these years.

The film, directed by Felipe Vellas and starring Lorena Comparato, delves into the events surrounding Elize's marriage to her husband Marcos Kitano Matsunaga, the director-general of the Brazilian empire Yoki. After discovering her husband's extramarital affair with an escort named Natalia, Elize confronted Marcos during a violent argument, which ended with her shooting him in the head and dismembering his body.

Elize was arrested and later convicted to 19 years and 11 months of imprisonment. However, due to her exemplary behavior and work ethic during her incarceration, her sentence was reduced to 18 years in 2016. The sentence was then reduced to 16 years and three months after Elize's mother, the family matriarch, confessed to the crime.

Elize is currently serving her sentence in prison. Despite the harsh circumstances, the young woman has found solace in her newfound love for her fellow inmate, Sandra Regina Sanchez, who is serving a 27-year sentence for her role in the kidnapping and murder of a child in 2006. However, this blossoming romance was short-lived, as Sandra Regina eventually fell in love with another inmate named Suzanne Von Richthofen, who was serving a 39-year sentence for orchestrating the murder of her parents with whom she was married in prison.

The question lingering in the minds of the public is what has become of Elize's daughter, who was left under the care of her grandparents at the age of one. According to local reports, Elize is now living in Franca, approximately 400 kilometers from Sao Paulo, awaiting the opportunity to re-start her education and career. Though the road to redemption may seem long, Elize has undoubtedly taken the first step towards regaining her lost path.

In the book titled 'Elise Matsunaga: la femme qui a démembré son mari,' co-authored by journalist Ulysse Campbell, the darker aspects of Elize's life as a call-girl were revealed. The young woman was rescued from forced prostitution during an operation by the Brazilian Federal Highway Police in 1996 and later reunited with her abuser, Marcos's relative. Elise has, however, found her voice in prison, thanks to her romance with Sandra Regina.

Today, Elize continues to serve her sentence with her future uncertain. While it has been a challenging journey for the young woman, this feature film has brought new scrutiny to her story, fueling debates on rehabilitation, restorative justice, and the capacity for personal change.

In the words of Elize's prison diary, 'Je suis Elise, une femme qui a vécu dans l'ombre mais maintenant je suis prête à briller.' (I am Elize, a woman who lived in the shadows but now I am ready to shine.)
