Unraveling the Japan GP Incident: Franco Colapinto Responds to Ollie Bearman's Criticism Over 50G Crash

Franco Colapinto acknowledges not being pleased with Bearman's comment that he felt was too one-sided after the incident in the Japan GP.

A nerve-wracking incident occurred between Franco Colapinto and Ollie Bearman at the Japan GP, which sparked a long debate in the F1 paddock. Especially in the eyes of the teams, analysts, and other drivers, this event has been scrutinized from various perspectives.

Colapinto and Bearman almost collided at high-speed in a sharp turn, showcasing how thin the line is between aggressive racing and potential serious accidents at the top level of motorsports.

Colapinto responded after Bearman criticized his actions leading up to the high-speed collision in the Japan GP. He emphasized that the conditions on the track were not as straightforward as they appeared from the outside or in replay footage. He "wasn't happy" with Bearman's comment, which he felt was too narrow-minded and failed to reflect the complexity of the situation at the time.

Bearman approached Colapinto at Spoon Curve turn during the final race in March, losing control and leaving the track after attempting to avoid contact. The situation developed very quickly, leaving little room for a safer reaction.

With less energy to spare, Colapinto drove around 45 km/h slower than Bearman, which is a significant difference in the context of modern-day Formula 1.

Believing that he was not entirely aware of the speed difference, Colapinto took a defensive line commonly used without making any sudden, high-risk maneuvers. His decision was later analyzed by various parties, including teams and racing authorities, who had access to detailed telemetry data.

Franco Colapinto acknowledges not being pleased with Bearman's comment after the near-tabrakan incident between him and Bearman at the Japan GP.

Racing officials, led by Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu, decided that neither driver was entirely to blame, resulting in no penalties for the incident. Although Bearman remained tight-lipped in Japan, he later shared his perspective, considering Colapinto's actions not in line with the safety standards expected on the track.

'Franco moved in front of me to defend his position, which last year would have been completely over the limit but might have been acceptable with a 5 or 10 km/h speed difference. However, with a 50 km/h gap, he didn't leave enough space for me and in essence, I had to avoid a much bigger collision to avoid hitting him,' Bearman said.

Bearman's statement prompted a response from Colapinto, who felt Bearman's comment was unfair considering the technical context of the situation. He emphasized that safety remains the top priority above all else.

'Most importantly, he's okay. I won't say too much; after the race, I immediately sent him a message, but he never replied, and he didn't speak to me, and I didn't speak to him either. What made me happiest was that he's okay, and nothing bad happened,' Colapinto said.
