Unseasonable Storm Unleashes Heavy Snowfall in US Rockies, Brings Travel Chaos

A rare June winter storm is barreling down on the northern Rocky Mountains, threatening to dump up to 12 inches of snow in certain areas and prompting weather alerts across the region. According to the US National Weather Service (NWS), the storm has the potential to bring significant snowfall to mountain areas in southwestern Montana and central Idaho, particularly above 6,500 feet. Temperatures in some areas are expected to plummet 15 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit below seasonal averages, resulting in hazardous travel conditions for those in high-elevation areas.

Forecasters warn that the combination of dense, wet snow, freezing temperatures, and strong winds could create treacherous conditions, including blocked roads, downed trees, and an increased risk of hypothermia for those traveling or recreating in high-elevation areas. As per the weather service, the storm's impact is expected to be most pronounced in mountain passes and backcountry areas, where snow levels may briefly drop enough to produce minor slushy accumulations. In addition to snow, the weather system is expected to bring showers and scattered thunderstorms across parts of the northern Rockies.

The NWS has issued Winter Weather Advisories and winter storm warnings for higher-elevation areas, with the most significant snowfall expected to occur in the Georgetown Lake region and surrounding higher elevations in Montana. Meanwhile, higher elevations in Wyoming are forecast to pick up 4 to 6 inches of snow, with some areas potentially receiving up to 6 inches at the Fourth of July peak in Idaho. Despite the winter-like conditions, the US Independence Day holiday period is likely to be affected, with travel disruptions expected to persist through June 29.

As the storm system moves into the region, wind gusts exceeding 50 mph in north-central Montana may create hazardous crosswinds, further exacerbating travel conditions. In addition, localized flash flooding is possible in and around Glacier National Park, due to excessive rainfall. The NWS has urged people to delay travel through mountain passes and backcountry areas where possible, carrying emergency supplies in case they become stranded, including tire chains, blankets, flashlights, extra clothing, food, water, booster cables, and first-aid kits.

The storm system is expected to bring a prolonged period of hazardous travel conditions to the region, with road closures, tree damage, and power outages all possible consequences of the heavy snowfall and strong winds. In anticipation of widespread disruptions, local authorities have been advised to activate emergency response plans, preparing for potential rescue operations and providing aid to affected communities.

While this unseasonable winter storm poses significant challenges for locals, it also presents a unique opportunity for scientists to study the rare phenomenon. Researchers may use the event to better understand the dynamics behind winter storms in the region, potentially leading to improved forecasting and warnings in the future.

Ringkasan

A powerful late-June winter storm is sweeping through the northern Rocky Mountains, dumping heavy snowfall and bringing travel disruptions to parts of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming.
