U.S. slackliner and BASE jumper Andy Lewis tragically lost his life in a fatal BASE jumping accident in Utah, along with an unidentified 50-year-old man. Lewis was a renowned athlete, famous for performing a daring stunt on stage with Madonna during the 2012 Super Bowl halftime show.
Lewis was an accomplished extreme athlete, who pushed the limits in various sports, including slacklining and tricklining. He had a huge following within the BASE jumping community and was known for his remarkable skill and athleticism.
The incident occurred at Mineral Bottom, a remote desert area near the Utah-Colorado border. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene after receiving a report of people injured in a BASE jumping attempt.
BASE jumping is a hazardous sport, involving parachuting from high objects, including buildings, bridges, or cliffs. Lewis openly acknowledged the risks associated with the sport.
Andy Lewis was also the founder of BASE Jump Moab, a business that offered BASE jumping excursions to inexperienced customers using tandem jumps. Tandem BASE jumping carries additional risk due to the involvement of two people under a single parachute.
A study on BASE jumping fatalities found that the risks of injury or death are five to eight times greater than those associated with skydiving. A total of 540 BASE jumping fatalities have been reported worldwide since 1981, including 30 deaths last year.
