MONTE CARLO, MONACO — Local tennis player Valentin Vacherot achieved a remarkable win, defeating fifth-ranked Lorenzo Musetti 7-6(6), 7-5 in the second round of the Monte-Carlo Masters.
This victory was particularly significant for Vacherot, as he became the second player from Monaco to advance to the third round of the prestigious tournament, following in the footsteps of his coach and half-brother, Benjamin Balleret.
Moreover, this win marked Vacherot's second victory over a top-five ranked player, having previously defeated 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic in the Shanghai Masters last year.
'If someone told me that my first win of the season against a top-five player would happen here, on the main court where I've been training since I was six, I wouldn't have believed it,' Vacherot said after the match.
He also expressed his fondness for clay courts, a surface synonymous with Monte Carlo.
'Many people might not know that I love clay. I grew up playing here for 18 years before moving to college and learning to play on hard courts. But this is where I truly learned tennis,' he said.
After a slow start in the first set, Vacherot admitted that his game is now back on track.
His achievements over the past year have been impressive, rising from 204th to 40th in the world rankings after his success in Shanghai and reaching the third round of the Australian Open this season.
In the next round, Vacherot will face Polish tennis player Hubert Hurkacz, aiming to continue his sensational run in Monte Carlo.
Vacherot's victory over Musetti marks a special moment in his career, defeating the world's fifth-ranked player
