Shanghai - The tension between Max Verstappen and the Red Bull Racing team has intensified after a leaked radio communication exposed his frustration during the Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix 2026.
The conversation showed how the four-time world champion vented his frustrations during the race at the Shanghai Circuit last weekend. The situation worsened when his Red Bull car suffered a loss of power in the last 10 laps, forcing him to fail to finish while in sixth place.
A technical issue with the RB22 car proved to be a significant blow to Verstappen. His car suddenly lost power due to a reliability issue that couldn't be fixed during the race.
However, Verstappen's problem wasn't just about engine trouble. Throughout the weekend in China, the Dutch driver had already expressed several complaints about the new generation of Formula 1 cars for the 2026 season.
He felt that the Red Bull car was difficult to handle and suffered from rapid tire degradation, making it hard for him to maintain his racing pace.
The tension escalated when a recording of the radio communication between Verstappen and his race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, was revealed. The conversation, which took place between laps 33 and 37, showed a heated exchange.
Verstappen complained about his car's energy management system.
'Friend, my boost button is really problematic,' Verstappen said over the radio.
Lambiase tried to give Verstappen advice on how to reduce tire management in certain corners, stating that he was losing around one second to his competitors in just a few corners. However, Verstappen questioned the analysis.
'In turns seven and eight, up to one second?' Verstappen asked.
Lambiase explained that the time loss occurred in one sector, although most of it came from those three corners. During the discussion, Verstappen also admitted to struggling with controlling his tire conditions.
'My tires have no grip. I really can't adjust them,' Verstappen said.
Lambiase tried to provide data showing that the most time was lost during braking and exit from Turn 6. However, Verstappen remained insistent.
