Veteran Lifeguard's harrowing encounter with great white shark highlights rising shark sightings in Maine

The recent incident involving a veteran lifeguard in Maine, who was pulled underwater by a great white shark during a routine patrol, has shed light on the rising concern of shark sightings along several Scarborough beaches. According to officials, at least a dozen sharks were spotted over the weekend, which is considered unusually high even for this time of year.

The lifeguard, Greg Wilfert, 71, who has spent 55 years working as a lifeguard, recounted the terrifying experience, which occurred as he was conducting his routine patrol. He explained that the shark grabbed his rescue device and dragged him under, leaving him grappling for his life.

'The amount of force that pulled me under – I've never felt anything like that, never,' Wilfert recalled in a shocking account of the incident. 'I thought I got caught in a boat propeller and it pulled me under and I realized when I was going under there was no boat. And I knew what it was, I knew it was a great white,' he added.

Despite the harrowing experience, Wilfert managed to break free from the shark's grip by slipping off the strap to his rescue buoy. He then swam to the surface and made a beeline for the shoreline.

'I said I gotta get out of here. I got one chance and I slipped that thing off as fast as I could and I swam to the surface and I just b-lined it for the shoreline,' he explained, describing the frantic moments as he struggled to escape the shark's grasp.

Following the incident, Wilfert took the decision to close the beach for an hour, before deploying a drone and jet skis to search the waters for any sign of the shark.

'I was screaming, just screaming for people to get out of the water cause I didn't know where that thing was,' Wilfert recounted, highlighting the panic that gripped him during the ordeal.

Carl Smith, a surfer who has been frequenting the beaches for years, corroborated the lifeguard's claims, describing the sightings as 'wild' and 'disconcerting.' 'You try to stay safe out there,' he advised, as officials maintained a red and yellow alert, cautioning beachgoers to check with lifeguards before entering the water.

The incident has sparked concerns about the safety of beachgoers, prompting officials to emphasize the importance of caution while enjoying the waters. 'You still can have fun at the beach but play it safe,' Wilfert urged, recommending that beachgoers stay close to shore and avoid venturing into deep waters.

As the shark sightings continue to dominate headlines, officials are faced with the daunting task of finding a solution to mitigate the risk of further encounters. Experts have warned that the increasing presence of great whites along Maine's shores is a clear indication that climate change is taking a toll on marine ecosystems.

Wilfert's harrowing encounter serves as a stark reminder of the delicate balance that exists between humans and the marine environment. The incident has raised questions about the long-term implications of climate change on coastal communities and the potential need for new measures to address the surge in shark sightings.

In the face of these mounting concerns, beachgoers are being urged to exercise caution while enjoying the waters. The incident has highlighted the importance of respecting the natural environment and acknowledging the potential risks associated with marine wildlife.

Wilfert's experience has sent shockwaves throughout the community, leaving many wondering about the future of beach safety. As officials work tirelessly to address the growing shark population, it remains to be seen how residents and tourists alike will adapt to the new reality.

The incident underscores the importance of adopting a more informed and environmentally conscious approach to marine conservation.
