Thunderstorms packing powerful wind gusts and heavy rain blew through northern Virginia on the afternoon of June 12.

Fans attending the UFC Freedom 250 Fan Fest in Washington, D.C., will need to stay weather-aware Sunday evening, as thunderstorms threaten to move into the nation's capital during the outdoor event.

AccuWeather meteorologists say the greatest concern will come after sunset, when storms could develop in and around the Washington, D.C., area. Lightning will be one of the top dangers for spectators gathered outside, and any thunderstorm that develops could also produce damaging wind gusts.

"We remain concerned about evening thunderstorms in and around the D.C. area this evening," AccuWeather Meteorologist Alex DaSilva said. "The best chance for storms would be starting around 7 p.m. with the chance of storms increasing after that. Lightning is a concern as there will be a lot of spectators outside. There is also a risk that some of these thunderstorms can be gusty. Winds of 50-60 mph cannot be ruled out between 7 and 11 p.m."

The UFC Freedom 250 Fan Fest has drawn thousands of fans to Washington, D.C., as part of a weekend of events surrounding UFC Freedom 250, which culminates in Sunday matches marking President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday. The outdoor setup means fans could have limited protection if storms move through quickly.

Anyone going to the fights should stay hydrated and in the shade when possible.

High temperatures on Sunday will be in the low to mid-90s Fahrenheit this afternoon with AccuWeather RealFeel temperatures around 100 degrees. AccuWeather meteorologists say temperatures will drop into the mid-80s by the time the main event gets underway.

Meteorologists warn anyone attending should be prepared to leave open areas if thunder is heard or lightning is seen. Fans should identify sturdy shelter before storms arrive and avoid taking cover under tents, trees, temporary structures or metal scaffolding if lightning is nearby.

The risk for storms is expected to increase during the 7-11 p.m. window, which could overlap with some of the busiest parts of the evening for fans. Even storms that are not severe could become dangerous in a crowded outdoor setting because of lightning, heavy rain and sudden wind gusts.

AccuWeather meteorologists will continue to monitor radar trends around Washington, D.C., through the evening.
