What's Next for Portugal After Losing Star Diogo Jota?

Portugal has an impressive lineup of talented footballers for the 2026 World Cup, and it may be considered the strongest Portugal world cup roster ever. The team has consistently shown its capabilities in recent years, winning the UEFA Nations League over Spain last year, a testament to its skill and teamwork.

Unfortunately, Portugal suffered a significant loss in 2025 when star player Diogo Jota died in a car accident in Spain at the age of 28. Jota's brother André Silva also passed away in the accident.

The heartbreaking incident occurred just a month after Jota was part of the Portugal team that won the 2025 UEFA Nations League title.

Jota's untimely death has led many to speculate that he would have been a part of the Portugal 2026 World Cup roster, had fate not intervened. In honor of their fallen teammate, the team will pay tribute to Jota ahead of its first match against DR Congo on June 17, 2026.

Jota's parents have been invited by the Portuguese Football Federation to attend the World Cup match.

The Portugal team and head coach Roberto Martinez remember Jota, calling him the true inspiration and the real spirit that drives the team forward.

'The light of Diogo Jota is for us the true inspiration and the real spirit that this team has.'
