Tereza Valentova Outlasts Elina Svitolina in an Uplifting Thriller at Cincinnati
Elina Svitolina vs Tereza Valentova · Round 2 · Cincinnati Tennis.com - A nail-biting encounter...

The calendar flipping to July brought about our latest in-season update to Top 30 prospect lists for every team by Baseball America. With each passing year, these updates have become increasingly insightful, shedding light on rising stars, struggling prospects, and the intricate dynamics at play within each organization. Our latest update is no exception, offering a unique perspective on the Detroit Tigers' top talent in 2026.
The list is comprised of young players like Cobi Coba, a Venezuelan signee who has been making waves in the Florida Complex League. Coba's steady improvement and added velocity have firmly established him as one of the top pitchers in the Tigers' system. Despite physical limitations, he possesses an athletic and balanced delivery, hinting at a promising future.
Another notable prospect is Gion Green, an accomplished hitter and shortstop from Oklahoma, who was drafted in the second round in 2022. While his metal bat power has dissipated in professional ball, Green has focused on developing his contact-hitting skills and versatility, showcasing the defensive prowess he possesses. As a 25-year-old with modest pull-side power, Green is unlikely to ever develop any significant power, but he still manages to carve out a utility role with his all-around skills.
One of the Tigers' top tools is MacDonald, a three-year starter at Miami (OH) who put himself on the draft map with a stellar junior season. His 20 home runs in 2024 were the second most in school history, making him a top prospect for the Tigers. However, his 37% strikeout rate and contact issues raise significant concerns about his path to the big leagues. Despite these doubts, MacDonald's loud tools, including plus power potential and plus-plus speed, make him a prospect to watch, and the Tigers have reason to believe he can eventually overcome his contact issues.
The Tigers have a number of other intriguing prospects, including Hao-Yu Lee, who stepped into the second base role after Gleyber Torres went on the injured list. While his defense has been fringy, Lee has shown survival skills at the plate that could help him carve out a role as a right-handed multi-position infielder on a team loaded with left-handed hitters. Enmanuel De Jesus, a 29-year-old rookie minor league free agent signing, has been a revelation in the bullpen, showcasing reliability and utility. Gage Workman, an injury-prone infielder/ outfielder, had a short 16-game call-up as a reserve but has since graduated. Bryce Rainer, a shortstop, has improved significantly since returning from a shoulder injury, toning down his aggressive swing and showing much better results.
Another prospect, Andrew Sears, has been a promising pick since returning to the mound in mid-May. Sears was slowed by an elbow fracture, but he has shown the ability to spot his 93-94 mph fastball, slider, and changeup while returning to Double-A Erie. Nick Dumesnil, an outfielder, has been slowed by a hamate injury this year and has seen his results suffer as a result of lacking pitch recognition. Owen Hall, a right-handed pitcher, has been back on the mound after missing almost four months of the 2025 season with a stress reaction in his shoulder, but he has struggled in the Florida Complex League.
The Tigers also have a number of players who have been dealing with injuries. Shortstop Jack Penney returned to action in late May but suffered another left shoulder injury just three games into his return, landing him on the full-season injured list. Righthander Kelvis Salcedo got off to a late start due to a knee injury that required surgery, but he returned for five starts only to be sent back on the IL at the end of May. Catcher Josue Briceño is still recovering from offseason wrist surgery, while shortstop Franyerber Montilla tore his ACL in his knee and is expected to miss the entire 2026 season.
Taking stock of these injuries, our prospects update offers invaluable insights into the current state of the Tigers' top talent. While some prospects show promise and potential, others face significant challenges that must be addressed if they are to achieve success. By understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each prospect, teams can make more informed decisions about their roster construction and long-term planning.
