Ayrton Senna's F1 Helmet Sold for Almost $1 Million

The helmet worn by Ayrton Senna during most of the 1992 Formula 1 season has been sold for nearly $1 million at an auction.

A private buyer purchased the helmet for a record-breaking $720,000 at an auction held by RM Sotheby's in April.

This price far exceeds the sale of Charles Leclerc's helmet for the 2023 Monaco GP, which was sold for $262,700 at a charity auction last year, with all proceeds going to flood victims in Italy.

Senna's helmet, designed by Japanese manufacturer Shoei, holds a special place for collectors due to several reasons.

Firstly, it features the iconic yellow, blue, and green colors of the Brazilian flag, instantly recognizable to any F1 fan.

Secondly, the 1992 season in which Senna wore this helmet is often remembered for his heroic actions as a McLaren driver.

When Erik Comas suffered a severe crash at Blanchimont during practice at Spa-Francorchamps, Senna stopped on the track to assist the unconscious French driver.

Senna carefully turned off the engine of Comas' Ligier, noticing that Comas' foot was still on the gas pedal, significantly reducing the risk of a fire, an action that Comas credits with saving his life.

Senna also supported Comas' head until medical personnel arrived at the scene.

This news of the helmet's sale comes as the world marks the 31st anniversary of Senna's death, who was a three-time F1 champion and tragically passed away in a crash at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix while driving for Williams.

His death led to improved safety standards in F1, with no driver losing their life due to injuries sustained during a Grand Prix until Jules Bianchi's tragic accident at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix.
