Renewed Optimism for California Birdwatchers Following the Disappearance of a Beloved Eagle
A recently missing eagle in California has sparked both concern and newfound hope among local...

A fascinating story of friendship and selflessness is unfolding in the animal kingdom, where a bald eagle named Spirit has made a life-saving donation to a fellow eagle named Jackie, who has been grounded and in distress near Big Bear Lake in Southern California.
Jackie, along with her mate Shadow, has captivated onlookers in California and beyond thanks to a nest-adjacent camera operated by Friends of Big Bear Valley, a nature-focused nonprofit organization. The camera has provided a unique glimpse into the lives of these majestic birds, and their dedicated fans are eagerly following Jackie's progress.
After Jackie was discovered grounded on July 17, ailing and in clear distress, she was transported to the Ojai Raptor Center for extensive care and medical evaluations. An examination revealed that the eagle was severely anemic, and her condition was met with concern from wildlife advocates and avian experts.
Luckily, a team of dedicated caretakers sprang into action to ensure Jackie received the best possible care. As part of the rehabilitation process, Spirit, a longtime resident of the CALM Zoo in Bakersfield, volunteered to donate her blood to aid in Jackie's recovery. This remarkable act of kindness has left many in awe, highlighting the strong bonds between animals and the importance of collaboration in the animal kingdom.
"As part of this collaborative effort, CALM Zoo's Animal Care Team performed a minimally invasive blood draw from Spirit," revealed a CALM Zoo social media post on July 24. "The blood was then safely transported to Ojai Raptor Center to support the recovery of patient #26-519."
It's worth noting that Spirit has been a resident of the California Living Museum (CALM) since 2003, after being found unable to fly due to wing fractures, severely emaciated, and suffering trauma to her right eye. Despite her long-term injuries, Spirit has thrived at the CALM Zoo and has helped visitors learn more about bald eagles, regional wildlife, and how to care for the planet.
Fans of Jackie and Shadow are surely finding a meaningful note in Spirit's heroic act. In a touching coincidence, a naming contest held in 2022 by local schoolkids resulted in the baby chick being named Spirit.
Now, you can admire Spirit, Jackie's heroic donor, by visiting the Bakersfield zoo, where you'll also have the chance to meet other fascinating critters that call this safe space home. CALM Zoo is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesdays through Sundays.
The story doesn't end there, however. Friends of Big Bear Valley have been working tirelessly to save the Moon Camp, a vital habitat for the eagles. And, thanks to a successful fundraising campaign, the organization announced that their goal had been met! A heartfelt thank you is extended to donors Anna and Greg Brockman, who contributed $5.5 million toward the cause, enabling the preservation of this crucial habitat.
As we look to the future, this incredible act of selflessness serves as a poignant reminder of the interconnectedness of the natural world and the importance of compassion and cooperation in times of need.
At this pivotal moment in the story of Jackie and Spirit, we can't help but feel inspired by the resilience, kindness, and unity that have characterized their journey so far.
In light of this heartwarming display of friendship and altruism, we can only imagine the endless possibilities that lie ahead for these remarkable birds and the people who dedicate themselves to their care and well-being.
