BANDUNG - BMKG's Bandung branch has predicted that the El Niño phenomenon will still affect the weather pattern in West Java, reducing rainfall from June 9 to 15, 2026.

This prediction is based on the latest global climate analysis, which shows the influence of El Niño through the +0.69 Niño 3.4 index and a Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) of -18.9. This condition has the potential to reduce rainfall in various regions of West Java.

"The effect of El Niño still has the potential to reduce rainfall in parts of Indonesia, including West Java. However, the impact of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) on Indonesia is expected to be negligible in the coming week," said BMKG Bandung's Head, Edi Wibowo, on Tuesday (9/6).

Although this trend reduces rainfall in West Java, BMKG is anticipating that light to moderate rainfall may still occur locally, mainly in the afternoon to evening hours in various regions of West Java.

BMKG also warns that there is a possibility of heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning, thunder, and strong winds, which is expected to be localized and relatively short-lived.

"We urge the public to remain vigilant and stay updated with official BMKG weather updates. Be aware of potential extreme weather-related disasters, such as floods, landslides, and fallen trees," advised Edi.

According to him, the transition period of the seasons, such as this one, is often marked by rapid and unpredictable changes in the weather. Therefore, the public needs to be more vigilant about potential heavy rainfall, strong winds, or lightning strikes.

BMKG encourages the public to take simple preventive measures, such as keeping their surroundings clean, not littering, and strengthening community solidarity to reduce disaster risks.

"The public is expected to recognize potential disaster risks in their area and start understanding how to mitigate them. For example, by not littering and keeping their surroundings clean," he said.

BMKG also emphasizes that although the trend of rainfall in West Java tends to decrease due to El Niño's influence, extreme weather conditions still need to be closely watched in the coming days.
