Earthquake Hits Central Maine: Residents Report Shaking

A small earthquake was recorded in central Maine over the weekend. The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude 1.6 earthquake was detected in Monmouth, Maine, on Saturday morning at 12:17 a.m.

The earthquake was reported to be 12.4 kilometers deep and was not felt by many, but a few residents did report feeling a slight shaking. Maine experiences several small earthquakes each year, and there have already been several this year.

In fact, just a few months ago, a magnitude 3.8 earthquake hit off the coast of southern Maine in January. It was one of the strongest earthquakes to occur in the state in recent history.

Residents were surprised but not alarmed by the recent earthquake.
