Egypt's National Team Profile for the 2026 World Cup: Mohamed Salah's Ambitious Quest for History

Watching the FIFA World Cup can be a paradox for soccer fans. Here's the mental preparation required.

Egypt's national team has returned to the world stage with a bold mission at the 2026 World Cup. Led by seasoned captain Mohamed Salah, the squad known as The Pharaohs is eyeing a historic breakthrough in the knockout stage.

Egypt secured their spot in North America after dominating as champions of Group A in the African zone (CAF) qualifying round. Under the guidance of head coach Hossam Hassan, they boasted an impressive record, securing eight wins and two draws from ten matches, coupled with an impressive goal difference of +18. This achievement marked a resurgence after they skipped the 2022 Qatar edition.

Although they hold the title of African champions with seven victories, Egypt's World Cup record is relatively modest. Since their debut in 1934 as the first African representative, they have only appeared in four editions (1934, 1990, 2018, and 2026). In their previous three participations, they were eliminated in the group stage.

In this edition, Egypt finds itself in Group G alongside Belgium, Iran, and New Zealand. With a seasoned lineup, they are believed to have a strong chance of crafting a new history for Kairo's soccer fans.

Mohamed Salah remains the heart of Egypt's attack. Currently without a club after leaving Liverpool, he has the opportunity to surpass coach Hossam Hassan's all-time record of 69 goals for the country (he needs two more goals to do so).

In the attacking line, Salah will be supported by rising star Omar Marmoush, who is making a name for himself at Manchester City. Midfielders Emam Ashour and Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet will bring creativity and experience to the squad.

Egypt's group stage campaign will begin against powerful Belgium in Seattle. For a full schedule of Egypt's matches, refer to the relevant time zone information:
